Sports betting

What is sports betting?

Sports betting is staking money on the result of an event at a price set by a bookmaker. If you are right you get paid at that price; if you are wrong the stake is gone.

The skill, such as it is, sits in whether the price was worth taking. Everything else is watching sport.

What you are buying

You are not buying an opinion about the game. You are buying a number, and that number already contains the book's opinion plus a margin.

So the question is never whether a team will win. It is whether the price on that team is generous relative to what you think the chance is. Those are different questions and confusing them is the single most common way people lose money slowly.

The main markets

Money line: who wins. Spread: who wins after a handicap. Total: how many points, over or under. Props: something specific inside the game. Futures: something months away.

Margins climb as you move down that list. The money line on a big game is priced tightly because every book competes on it. A same-game prop bundle is priced with a lot more room.

In Canada, on a phone

Single-game betting has been legal across the country since 2021, and Ontario runs a registered private market on top of that while other provinces route through their own lottery corporation.

The practical result is that which apps you can install depends on where you are standing. Our province pages count that out one by one, and the sportsbook apps list is the shortlist we would actually put on a home screen.
