EXPLAINER Betting odds: the three formats, side by side −118 means you stake C$118 to win C$100. That is it. Everything else, decimal, fractional, implied probability, is the same number wearing a different hat. Read it → EXPLAINER What every casino game costs, per hour A percentage tells you nothing until you multiply it by how fast the game goes. Here is every common game converted into what sixty minutes costs. Read it → EXPLAINER Bonus arithmetic: what an offer is actually worth Every offer on this site gets the same three-line sum. Here is the sum, so you can run it on anything you are shown anywhere else. Read it → EXPLAINER What happens after you tap withdraw Deposits are instant because a deposit costs an operator nothing. A withdrawal goes through four stages, and every one of them is a place where hours disappear. Read it → EXPLAINER The C$20 test: how to try an operator without funding it Every operator on this board went through the same routine. It takes an evening and about twenty dollars, and it tells you more than a month of reading. Read it → EXPLAINER A stake plan you can hold at midnight Any stake plan works on a good night. The test is whether it is still there at midnight after four losses, which is where every complicated plan fails. Read it → EXPLAINER Reading a slot's info panel in twenty seconds Every licensed slot carries a panel with the numbers in it. It is two taps away, almost nobody opens it, and it contains the only facts on the screen. That is exactly backwards, and it is behind most of the withdrawal complaints on the internet. Read it →

Odds and prices

Reading a number, converting it, and working out what the book is holding

12
How do betting odds work? A price tells you two things at once: what the bet pays, and what the book thinks the chance is. Minus 118 means C$118 risked to win C$100, and it also means the book is pricing that outcome at roughly 54%. How do you read betting odds? Read every price as a return first and a probability second. Decimal 3.00 returns three times your stake in total, and it says the outcome is about a one in three shot. What are the odds in gambling? Odds are the chance of an outcome. In a casino they are also the payout attached to it, and those two are never the same number. How do you calculate odds in gambling? For a game with countable outcomes, divide the ways you win by the total number of outcomes. For a price, divide one by the decimal and you get the implied chance. What are gambling odds in sports? Sports odds are a price the book sets on an outcome it cannot count. They carry the book's estimate of the chance, plus a margin, and both parts move. What is a money line in betting? A money line is a bet on the winner and nothing else. The margin does not matter, the handicap does not exist, you just need your side to come out ahead. What is a standard betting line? The standard line is the handicap or total set so both sides are roughly equally likely, then priced at about 1.91 each way. That price is the default across most North American markets. What is a sports betting line? A line is the number the book attaches to a game to make both sides of a bet roughly equal. It can be a handicap on the score, a total for combined points, or just a price on the winner. How do you use a betting calculator? A betting calculator takes a stake and one or more prices and gives you the return. That is it, and your bet slip already does the simple version. What is an accumulator bet? An accumulator, called a parlay in North America, combines several selections into one bet. Every leg has to win or the whole thing goes. What is a live betting option? Live betting, or in-play, is a market that keeps trading after the event starts. Prices reprice every few seconds as the game moves. What is an online betting exchange? An exchange puts you against other bettors rather than against a house. Somebody backs an outcome, somebody else lays it, and the platform matches them and takes a cut of the winnings.

Sports betting

Markets, strategy, staking, and where Canadian law actually sits

10
What is sports betting? Sports betting is staking money on the result of an event at a price set by a bookmaker. If you are right you get paid at that price; if you are wrong the stake is gone. What is online sports betting? Online sports betting is the same activity through an app or a website instead of a counter. You deposit, you place bets from a slip, settled winnings land in a balance you can withdraw. How do you bet on sports? Pick a book, verify your identity, deposit a small amount, place a single bet you can explain in one sentence, and take some money out early so you know the withdrawal works. What is a sports betting strategy? A strategy is a written rule about which prices you take and how much goes on each one. If it changes because you feel good about a game, it was never a strategy. What is a sports betting system? A system is a mechanical rule that produces bets without you deciding anything: back the home side in a defined situation, take the under when a condition holds, and so on. Is sports betting legal in Canada? Yes. Single-event sports betting became legal across Canada in 2021, and every province offers it in some form. What is matched betting? Matched betting is covering both outcomes of a market, one at a bookmaker and the other at an exchange, so the result does not matter. Done with a free bet, it turns a promotion into cash minus a small known cost. What is a matched betting strategy? A matched betting strategy is a queue: which offers you work, in what order, and what qualifying loss you will accept on each. What is a betting system? A betting system is a rule for how much to stake next, usually based on what just happened. Martingale doubles after a loss, Fibonacci steps a sequence, D'Alembert adds a unit. How does a betting system work? A progression system reads the last result and sets the next stake from it. Lose, stake more. Win, reset. That is the whole engine.

Casino games

Blackjack, slots, live tables and what each one does to a phone

10
How do you play blackjack? You get two cards, the dealer gets two with one hidden, and you want a higher total than the dealer without going past twenty one. Face cards are ten, an ace is eleven until eleven would bust you. How do you play slots? Pick a stake and press spin. That is the entire game, and everything else on the screen is decoration around a random number generator. How do you win at slots? You cannot influence a spin. The result is drawn before the reels animate and no stake pattern, timing trick or bonus-buy sequence touches it. What are the best slots to play? The best slot for you is the highest published return rate at a volatility your balance can survive, in a title that holds portrait and loads fast. What is a slot machine payout? Payout usually means return to player: the share of everything staked that comes back over millions of spins. A 96% title keeps four cents of every dollar. What is a casino jackpot? A jackpot is a top prize that sits above the normal paytable. Fixed jackpots pay a set multiple of stake; progressives grow from a slice of every bet until somebody hits one. What are the most popular casino games? Slots dominate everything by volume, then live dealer tables, then blackjack and roulette, with crash and arcade titles growing fast on phones. What is a live dealer casino? Live dealer is a real table in a studio, filmed and streamed to your screen, with your bets placed through an overlay. The cards and the wheel are physical. What is a mobile casino? A mobile casino is a casino you play on a phone. That covers three different products: a native app, a wrapper around the website, and a browser bookmark with an icon. How do you gamble in a casino? Decide what you are spending before you arrive, put that much on the table or in the account, and treat it as the price of the evening rather than an investment.

The arithmetic

House edge, stakes, systems, and why none of the systems work

12
What is the casino house edge? The house edge is the percentage of every dollar staked that the casino keeps over the long run. Single-zero roulette is 2.70%, blackjack played correctly is about 0.5%, keno can be 25% or worse. What is the house edge in gambling? House edge is the built-in margin that makes a gambling business a business. It ranges from under 1% on the best table bets to well over 20% on the worst side bets and lottery-style games. What is gambling? Gambling is risking something of value on an uncertain outcome in the hope of winning more. Three parts: a stake, chance affecting the result, and a prize. How does gambling work? You stake money on an outcome. If you win the operator pays you slightly less than the true odds would justify; if you lose they keep the stake. That gap is the whole business. What is a payout in gambling? Payout is what a winning bet returns, usually quoted as odds or as a multiple of stake. It also means the process of getting money out of an account, which is a completely different subject wearing the same word. What is a gambling stake? A stake is the money you put on a single bet. Everything else in gambling maths is a percentage of it. What is a gambling system? A gambling system is a rule for what to bet and how much, usually derived from recent results. Martingale, Labouchère, Paroli, D'Alembert and every named variation are the same idea in different clothing. How do you use a gambling strategy? A usable strategy has four parts: choose the cheapest form of the game, play it correctly on every decision, size stakes so a bad run cannot finish you, and record what happened. How do you improve at gambling? Three skills transfer across every game: picking the cheapest version, executing correct play without thinking, and holding stake discipline when you are losing. What are the best gambling tips? The tips that matter are boring: pick the cheap version of the game, play it correctly, keep stakes flat, and set the limit before you start rather than during. How do you avoid losing money gambling? Over enough bets every house-banked game loses money. That is the design, and nothing on this page changes it. What is high roller gambling? A high roller is somebody staking far above the room's average, and operators build separate service around them: higher limits, faster withdrawals, a named contact.

Safety and the law

Licences, scams, regulation, and how to check a brand yourself

11
How do you choose a gambling site? Check the licence, then check how the money comes back out. Those two answer most of the question and the rest is preference. How do you avoid gambling scams? Most gambling scams are not casinos at all. They are fake apps, tipster subscriptions, and people who contact you after you have already lost money. How do you spot an online gambling scam? The reliable signals are all about money leaving rather than money going in. Deposits always work; scams show themselves at the withdrawal. How do you stay safe gambling online? Safety online splits into three: is the operator legitimate, is your money protected, and is your phone set up so a bad night cannot run away from you. What are gambling regulations? Gambling regulations are the conditions attached to a licence. They cover how player money is held, how games are tested, what can be advertised and what protection tools must exist. What are the legal aspects of gambling? Gambling is legal in Canada and regulated province by province. The Criminal Code allows provinces to conduct and manage it, which is why the rules change when you cross a border. How do online gambling websites work? An online casino is usually three companies wearing one brand: a platform provider running the accounts and cashier, game studios supplying the titles, and payment processors moving the money. What is the gambling industry? The gambling industry is operators plus the suppliers behind them: platform companies, game studios, payment processors, sports data firms, and marketing affiliates. Is Amazon Slots legit? Amazon Slots is not one of the forty nine operators on our board, so we have not installed it, timed a withdrawal from it or counted its taps. We are not going to grade a product we have not used. Is Luxury Casino legit? It is not one of the forty nine operators we have installed and torn down, so there is no number from us to give you and we will not invent one. Is gambling a sin? That depends on the tradition you are asking, and they disagree. Some prohibit it outright, some permit moderate recreational play, and several distinguish between a small stake for entertainment and gambling that damages a household.

How this section is built

Two kinds of page. The short ones answer one question: what a money line is, what wagering does to a bonus, how to tell an app from a web wrapper. Read the first paragraph and leave if that was all you needed.

The long ones are explainers. They take a subject that will not fit in two sentences, like the arithmetic behind a welcome offer, and run it all the way through in dollars.

Everything is written for a phone, because that is where all of this actually happens now. Where a step involves a settings screen, we say how many taps deep it is.

Where to start

New to betting: how do betting odds work, then how to bet on sports.

New to casino games: what everything costs, then how to play blackjack.

Been handed an offer and want to know if it is real: the bonus arithmetic.

Worried about somebody, or about yourself: take a break. No operator links on that page.
