Is gambling a sin?
That depends on the tradition you are asking, and they disagree. Some prohibit it outright, some permit moderate recreational play, and several distinguish between a small stake for entertainment and gambling that damages a household.

Where the traditions differ
Islamic teaching prohibits gambling explicitly, and the prohibition is treated as clear rather than as a matter of degree.
Christian denominations vary widely. Some treat it as inherently wrong, others as a matter of stewardship and proportion, permitting modest recreational stakes while warning about greed and about money owed to dependants.
Jewish tradition has a long discussion in which habitual gambling is viewed unfavourably, partly on grounds of it not being productive work.
Buddhist and Hindu texts contain warnings about gambling as a source of ruin, generally framed as attachment and consequence rather than as prohibition.
The common thread
Almost every tradition that discusses it separates a small amount staked for entertainment from gambling that takes money a family needs. That distinction is doing most of the work in every position above.
The secular version of the same question is the one this site keeps returning to: is the amount decided in advance, and does it stop there.
